Yes, what we feared since the start of the season- when it was clear to everyone but Gus (I'm happy with my squad) Poyet that the team was significantly weaker than last year- becomes more apparent with every game. This is a poor side with clueless management that will struggle in the Championship next season.
There are so many weaknesses it is hard to know where to begin. The playing staff is simply not good enough. Ageing centrebacks, slow in thought and action, 'attacking' fullbacks with no ability to tackle or defend, crab-like midfielders who consistently hold onto the ball until opposing defenders are in position, than give it away, forwards who lack close control, and cannot pass or shoot with any accuracy. The manager is worse- he failed to sign a central defender despite the fact that we were clearly needed two if not three. He compounded this by failing to add any defensive quality on the flanks or ij midfield. No creativity was added, no-one who could offer pace or real width, and no quality up front (Defoe will be another donkey- there was a reason he went to Canada- his premier goal-scoring days are behind him and we have simply signed another expensive pensioner). On top of this Poyet has made some awful signings- Bridcutt, Jones and Alvarez have not offered an hour of premiership quality between them since arriving- and has shown a complete inability to organize or motivate the squad, orchestrating so many dismal performance that all who play for the team have seen a sharp decline in value, Fletcher has lost about 10 million, Altidore was transformed from an eight million player to a makeweight, Jonhson's value has halved, as has Giaccerini's and Wickham's.
Worse, the ineptitude of players and manager has consistently revived the fortunes of key relegation opponents- Hull, QPR, now Villa. How much worse do things have to get before Short wakes up to the fact that his investment will also be worth only half as much when we plummet into the Championship? How many more of these woeful performances must we suffer before some sense is restored? Of course, with the shower we have on the field, we may go down anyway, but let us at least go down looking like we are trying to play football and showing some fight and pride. Poyet must go now, and half the squad need clearing out in the summer, whether we go down or not.

Don't think poyet will be there next week, its no good saying he needs time or might as well wait until end of season we still have enough games left to stay up if we get rid of poyet now don't care who comes in just not poyet so come Mr short sack him NOW he won't walk away plus I think every fan would back anyone who come and I mean any1 just not poyet or he's back room staff sack the lot of them

Hi you guys Villa fan here.
I have been reading some of your comments on yesterdays game, to be honest I have to agree with most of you. It is never too late and I think Poyet needs to go NOW.
He is playing players out of position, simply because he is unsure of his best side.
It’s a shame that a club as big as Sunderland is in such a position, you are a huge club the same as us and we both have great fan bases.
We were in a shocking state under Lambert and our site became a breeding ground for discontent we started petitions and all sorts of protests and before long the local paper got involved and hey bingo Lambert sacked.
I know we are not safe yet but our new boss has more than one plan in place and seems to have a very infectious way about him, he gets people forward very quick and fills the box up.
Believe me a manager has a huge say in how players have to play during a game, look at us under Lambert and now under Sherwood, same players but different mind set and coaching.
I personally don’t think you will go down, I hope not anyway, I think hull are certs for the drop along with Leicester and QPR.
Anyway best of luck in your fight and hope you do Newcastle.

The problem is who can take over? Di Canio for all his insanity was desperatly trying to change the culture of the idiots playing for us, they rebelled & played terribly till he got fired.

Poyet honestly is a one trick pony tactics wise and has shown an absolute fear of changing things up and trying new things. Why not try some of our youth team? they're playing great atm and you can bet they would play their damn hearts out.

The players we have are not good enough, not committed enough and for sure not showing any passion. We're so unbalanced, slow and lacking in creativity. Our back line is so slow that they have to defend so deep it hinders our attacks. Our midfield has no pace or mobility and a complete lack of vision. Our strikers. honestly I just cannot believe how often they miss totally open goals it's unreal.

We need a total clear out and sadly relegation is probably the only way we'll get shot of half of them, though I'm sure they're very well covered in their contracts. That being said who would come? For a club so well supported we're so lacking in players willing to come here, or a wage budget large enough to truly flesh out a good team. We need to get rid of the 30-60k brigade, bring in our youth players and rebuild entirely.

Wyndrusher.
It might not sit well with some but big Sam would come short term and offer him the job ”IF“ he keeps you up, only a thought as he will be gone from West Ham.
You know your squad better than I do that’s for sure, and you sum it up very well I think !
But from what I know of the players you have I think whoever picks the side should select a team and stick with it every week till the end of the season, to get some momentum and balance.
Give the players specific jobs to do, forget any zonal marking (I hate it) get your man and stay with him, I also think you need a target man Play wickham as a centre forward with defoe playing off the shoulder, I would then sit Fletcher just behind the front two.
Behind those three I would have Rodwell left of midfield, Cattermole central midfield and Larsson right of midfield, these guys are all fighters the get stuck in type you need right now, but you do need to play with some width, yesterday you were very narrow and nothing down the flanks.
The defence I am not so sure about but O`shea and Brown I would have thought pick themselves based on the pedigree they have, as for left and right back you would know more about, I hope.
Vito Mannone would be my choice between the sticks, he can do a job for you, because it appears the defence and Keeper have lost confidence in each other.
Then keep the same side so that they can all build on some stability and familiarity, rotation and changes are no good and not needed (unless forced), in our position, there is only one aim and that is stay in the prem.
Bye the way I am only seeing it through my eyes, and not in any way slating Sunderland I want you to stay up, its strange how we as supporters can see it why can`t managers on mega bucks see it.

Agree0 Disagree0

You're not wrong on any counts. The issues we have are multiple, our central defenders are old and slow, they've not got the legs to chase and has been shown all season they get past them and they score.

Pantilimon has blown his chances granted he's done well considering how terrible our defense has been, it's time to swap back.

PVA at left back is fast this is true, he however cannot defend. During the close season I'd retrain him as a winger as he has the attributes to fill the roll well. We have no backup for left back bar o'shae or vergini who both can't play the position well as they're not that fast.

Rb we're okay on if jones can keep fit, he's got some speed yet not enough to go with PVA on the left side, which unbalances us even again.

Midfield we've got Larrson who granted can pass a ball, but again has no speed and his defensive work tends to end up in yellow cards or him getting injured. Bridcutt. He tried to play as a central defender in the last game and screwed the pooch on all fronts, Poyet said he's taught Cattermole how to play DM, yet he never plays the position himself he's always too far back.

Wingers we've a decent stock, yet Alverez really isn't clicking, Johnson is hit and miss & Buckley is just not in the match for most of the time. Gomez is a walking facepalm. Rodwell is a DM, not an AMC no matter what Poyet tries he'll never adapt to it as again he's not got the speed or vision. Giaccherini is decent but too short and too frail.

Then you have our forwards, lacking in all areas for service and Poyet hates to play 4-4-2 even though our squad is pretty much only suitable for that. 4-5-1? what's the point, we've not got an all out and out complete type forward. Defoe is an excellent poacher, fletcher is in a similar vein yet has a bit of height where Defoe is tiny. Graham. I love his work rate yet again he's missed everything that's come to him. Wickham, I hope we gave him that stupidly expensive contract to sell him, he's never going to be what we need until he gets a few seasons in the right spot preferably with a smaller faster forward to feed.

So where do we turn? there's no creativity there, no passion & no motivation.

I'd give Honeyman a shot, he can play all across the midfield. Watmore is decent in center & wing, well worth a run & Mandron has been scoring and is quite tall, I'd get him back and give him a run too. That would at least give us some mobility and attacking threat, and on the plus side a few who are as fast as Defoe and who can support him.

Agree0 Disagree0

You know Sunderland as I know Villa, so keep shouting someone will have to listen eventually.
Our players seemed clueless under Lambert, just goes to show what fan power can achieve.
I wish your team all the best in the battle for survival, as I said we are not safe yet and with Everton winning today it looks very much like it`s between 6 sides.
I think 36 points should be enough this year maybe even 35 who knows, anyway I will give you all a shout if and when things get better.
Best of luck

Agree0 Disagree0

BIG SAM should of had the job six year ago would fit and cope well in north east the only thing is we would have to wait until next season :(

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah I've been going to the matches for almost 35 years now, even when we were down divisions I've never seen us play this badly. I mean sure we've been thrashed a good few times, lost so many games we should have won.
I guess it's just back then when we lost badly the frustration was evident on their faces, they faught and faught and just couldn't do it. Now I see a bunch of over paid guys turn up for a pay day & I can honestly understand why the stadium was half empty come half time against you guys, we were shocking.

Back to Reid and before they'd come out the second half with the fear of god in them & win or lose they'd bloody well play their butts off. What did we see there? absolutely nothing.

I think the rot started with keane, he brought in a bunch of past their prime & sub par players just to flex the wallet & look how well that went.
Sbragia didn't really do anything, Bruce ugh, even worse then o'neill who had the tactics, just not the will to enforce them & again by then this drinking culture was so ingrained they just stopped caring.

Di'canio had heart and tried to change things, yet the players have the power and then our wage bill was maxed with terrible signings by a director of football who shouldn't be allowed to be near a subuteo set. Now Poyet, who has a fixed tunnel vision of how he wants to play, no players who can pull it off & still tries to shoehorn them into it. The formation has changed a little due to injuries & suspensions but the results have been the same.

Any manager who comes in for the next few seasons is going to be on damage control till half this team is gone, the rest I honestly would not mind seeing the back of either if they're not going to put a shift in and we can get replacements who aren't on silly money.

Villa dave you talk a lot of common sense do you want the managers job at Sunderland lol ?? we need a short and long term plan to start get rid of this inept manager Now ! any delay will be disasterous !. we have 9 games to save our Premiership and if we are to go down and regroup i'd rather us go down fighting ! I've questioned the likes of Alladyce but even the guy in the local chip shop would do better than Poyet ! hopefully Short (who has himself to look at over this debacle of a season ) needs to act quickly and Congeltons role also has to be questioned !

Agree0 Disagree0

In a way it is Shorts fault, he's backed the managers who've wasted transfer funds on so many average or over the hill players and it's why we're where we are today. He's not budging now and it's the right call, he can't just keep spending money hand over fist, just look at how much he's ploughed into sunderland and the transfers since he took over, it's not a tiny amount.

Even if right now he said to poyet that at the end of the season he has 1 billion to spend he still couldn't spend a penny due to our wage bill being maxed.

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Mar 2015 13:10:18
Agree Wyndrusher about the wasted funds at this club ! a lot of Premiership managers would die for the funds Poyets has had !. there's something not right at this club at the moment and the worst part of it all is the lack of fight and passion on the field !!

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah he had transfer funds yet no wage bill to bring anyone in, it's been the same for the last season, sell to buy. If we'd cleared out half the team before this season & rebuilt we'd be in a better situation, however the players have the power and the stupid contracts they've given are bonkers. That being said poyets signings have tanked horribly there's no excuse for that.

Short has to stick to the fairplay rules as we're too small a club money wise to get away with the crap the bigger teams do, like have owners use shell companies to pay for sponsorships just to get extra income.

We've spent over £117 million in the last five years, for a club our size that's huge, and it's been wasted time and time again by managers who have just been clueless.

Being a Sunderland fan is never boring !
Cos every week we have a different team and a different formation - so nobody knows what's coming next - not even our director of football - who can't see our obvious weakness at the back and failed to plug it. And who let's people like ndaiye leave to keep little boys like Bridcutt! - and keeps a manager who can't turn the same side out twice in a row and who plays centre forwards on the left wing because he knows that position is a real problem but does not have the sense that put van arnholt there and backfill with riviellere.
Fact is players are searching for their role in the team - one minute they are concentrating on defending the next they need to attack more - one game out on the left - the next on the right - one game on the field - then 2 on the bench - we do look like a pub team -
What is annoying is we can do better - set the team up right - which is even harder with Defoe in it - but set up 3-2-4-1 with Defoe supported through the middle by wickham and Graham - wingers outside them - van arnholt on the left and either Buckley or alverez on the right (no Johnston)- 2 holding midfield - out of carts Rodwell and Larson -then 3 at the back - rivieller oshey and Jones - not needed to fly up the flanks but to play like defenders!
If I ran the pub - I would give it a go from now until the end of the season - can't be as bad as what we saw yesterday .

Where do we start. The players. Getting rid of the likes of Colback, Sessegnon and Gardner is fine if you replace them with better players. We haven't and its alright saying they wanted to go but if they had been offered enough money they may have stayed. Replaced by Bridcutt, Alvarez and a few others was a disaster. Couple that with our loan players last season like Alonso, Borini etc we simply don't have the players this season. Losing Johnson and now looks like Larson for the season ( and how bizarre was that yesterday with Larson) the refusal to try a bit of youth ( Whatmore ) what harm could it do!!! I think what happened was in January they looked at the teams below us like Burnley and their fixtures and thought we had enough. Well beating Man City scotched that one. Buying Defoe didn't address the issue of creativity and the system they are playing is obviously not sitting well with the players we have. 4 4 2 is our only option now getting Whickham more central and giving Defoe something to play off. If he doesn't get the ball we can't score!!!! The whole structure of the club needs to be looked at because their complete strategy has been a disaster from day one. Too late to replace Poyet as the best managers have gone ( Sherwood and Pulis ) it's not looking good I'm afraid is it.

Playing strikers Fletcher and Wickam on the left wing just baffles supporters ! which other manager would do that ? the Larsson thing at the beginning of the 2nd half was bizarre !!! 4 nil down and playing with 10 men for 4-5 minutes ! unbelievable ! Ellis Short has to share some responsibility as he brings these managers in and is he really interested in this club ! if 20,000 supporters out of nearly 47,000 loyal fans walking out doesn't resonate that someone needs to be done right from board level to the players and if he's only intereng in the premier ship cash then he should go and bring in a football based chairman . how about Quinn as director of football ? I can't see us getting out of this with the present regime and not at least giving the likes of Whatmore a try is a recipe for disaster !

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Mar 2015 11:29:18
And Worse still we are negotiating to buy Alvarez for £8 million ! and give Brown a new contract ! its unbelievable what's going on here !! only Fletcher tried yesterday and was unlucky not to score ! we play too narrow and the flanks are so exposed game after game after game ! why doesn't the manager see this ??? play the reserve team against West Ham at least they will give 110 % !!!!

Agree0 Disagree0

Bobstokoe is right. Villa (Sherwood) played a 16 year old yesterday. 16! We (Poyet) didn't even have our best 21 year old on the bench.
