Interesting to note that the Di Canio criticism was deliberately sparked by Piara Powar, executive director of FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) without any evidence of racist acts being committed by Di Canio.
Meanwhile the Mail Online reported on 8th February:

"A leading force in football's battle against racism has been criticised after he called an Asian supporter a 'coconut'.
Piara Powar, who is the executive director of the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) organisation, has been a vocal figure in the game's recent rows.
But an exchange on Twitter has left Mr Powar, who is also Asian, embroiled in a race controversy of his own making. "

Sounds like a case of double standards.

Milliband took us to war over WMD which never materialised! He was a sap on Shorts capital with nothing positive done for the Club. His expenses were dubious at best. He's off to work for a Charity with an annual salary in excess of $100k - the Prosecution rests! Bingo.

Believable6 Unbelievable1

This is how Sunderland look after their own, castigate ex managers, players & staff.

No wonder the only manager you can get is from League 1 & you have to pay over the odds for players.

I did not see anyone complaining about Miliband when he was still at the club.

Sour grapes?

Agree2 Disagree2

Miliband is from a Jewish family.

What do you expect?

You Sunderland fans have lost the plot.

Agree5 Disagree2

Milliband is scoring brownie points before he trundles off to the usa never heard him complain about the Japanese at Nissan the people who raped murdered and tortured our men and women in the last war.

I am neither for or against our new head coach Di Canio, but it is looking like it is a bad mistake by Short. The reason being is the bad, and I mean bad reaction from the press, and the Milliband thing compounds it. The press are hell bent on crucifying Di Canio for the Nazi salute episode from a few years back, and they are not going to let go. In my opinion he has no chance. Chris-s.

Believable5 Unbelievable7

So you are against

Agree4 Disagree1

I don't care if Attila the person is in charge, as long as it stops us going down.

Agree6 Disagree0

Disagree with that as Milliband has not only turned his back on his brother and party but when conditions changed he turned his back on the club for a quick pay day!. we don't need that sort of disloyalty and we should get behind the new manager for the rest of the season at least!

Agree4 Disagree1

The facsism comments are just ridiculous 7 years on because he has apologised and why drag up someones past after all this time. !. get behind the manager! {Ed001's Note - it is not past though, he is a self confessed fascist. That is his belief. The salute is dragged up because it was a ridiculous thing to do and he does have a track record of similar idiotic things throughout his career. I would have thought he had grown up, but he was still getting into silly situations while at Swindon. As for his apology, it was not a true apology, he simply claimed his words were twisted, which is nonsense. He made the statement and he should stand by it, or clarify what he actually meant, as his words are there for all to read.}

Agree1 Disagree3

I am disgusted by the picture of hjm giving a Nazi salute. Face of pure evil.
Why on Earth did Short pick him?
Instead of being able to concentrate on avoiding relegation we have instead a load of bad press and a Fascist as Head Coach.
Of course I want the club to stay up, but at what price?
I have now lost complete hope for the future with Short in controll.
Can see Short selling up after this fiasco.

Agree4 Disagree7

Jeez, you're actually a mackem who speaks sense, FINALLY

Agree1 Disagree4

The salute was a roman salute, check the history books! The Romans were around long before the nazis started using it! FACT {Ed001's Note - it was nothing to do with Nazis, correct, but it was actually the Lazio ultra salute, which is in reference to Mussolini, who copied it from the Romans. So you are partly correct. I find it worrying that he is saluting a bunch of hooligans myself, whatever the salute.}

Agree1 Disagree0

Ed if you read up on the situation with the ultras at Lazio that di canio fell out with them when they wanted him to be a figure head stating that he had facist views but was not a racist. myself in the past have voted tories ukip and bnp I voted for these parties on my views that anyone of these parties are better than voting for labour and that in the society we live you are allowed your opinion and before you call me a racist I also have coloured friends Chinese indian north African pakistanis {Ed001's Note - I know the situation with him, I also know the man has some extreme views. I fail to see what your voting habits have to do with anything? The man was very close to hooligan groups, that should be a worry to you, regardless of his political beliefs.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Semantics.
The guy is a time bomb.
We all want survival. However, I think Short has got the wrong man for long term.
I think he will keep us up by giving some of the under performing jokers a good kick up the AR*E.
I will still be giving my support to the team, but hope that the choice of coach is a short term solution.

01 Apr 2013 19:12:37
Right. Wether we like him or not PDC is now manager of this great club and everyone needs to get behind him if we have any chance of staying up. The results can not get any worse than they did under MON. Stop the ridiculous posts about facism and racism and let's all unite and do our bit to help give the team every chance to get points on the board. If the team gives us 100% between now and the season end I am sure we will stay up so COME ON SUNDERLAND!

Believable10 Unbelievable3

Aye well said fella COME ON LADS!

Talking about untried managers from the lower leagues what about Moyes of Everton? he was in the lower leagues and look how he aspired too. just because you get a big name in doesn't guarantee the club success!

Believable5 Unbelievable1

Just seen his interview. He certainly talks the talk. He says he is aiming for 3 points at the weekend and that's the mentality we need. Safc93

Agree6 Disagree0

Was just thinking the same thing about Moyes

Agree4 Disagree1

What has Moyes ever done at Everton?

He came to a midtable club and kept them a midtable club.

Agree1 Disagree5

He's making them a top 6 club and he's trying to get them to champions league

Agree5 Disagree1

I am a mad Cats fan but I have to say what has he done for the Toffees! No doubt there wage is a lot less than ours and look at our situations! I would soon be in Evertons place than ours! Get behind PDC and let us hope and pray we stay up I have looked at other teams run ins and ours is the hardest I think! RAW74

Agree3 Disagree0

Everton will be lucky to end in the top 6.

And even if they do, that will be their best season, Moyes will allow his best players to be sold as he is a Yes-man.

Agree0 Disagree3

We have Chelsea and spurs away the other five games are winnable we all know we have the players to win these games its just mon didn't it got to the point where martin was that scared to lose his tactics went out the window in pdc I think it is a gamble but i'm hoping he can bring belief back to the players who seemed disheartened.

Any guesses who Di CANIO would like to buy in the summer

Believable2 Unbelievable0

There is no money.

It has all been wasted.

Agree4 Disagree6

Head coach don't buy players they just choose the team and tactics and in charge of training sessions

Agree2 Disagree1

U have average players on massive wages like adam johnson. john oshea. wes brown to name a few. thing mignolet well be gone for you, s the rest will stay and take the 3 seasons left of wages sat on the bench. mon pay off and staff be 5 million and this years fee, s where not agged to the £30 million fee, s of fletcher, ajohnson and your defender. not much left to spend and in debt to short of over 100 million. k

Agree1 Disagree3

What defender did we spend 8 million on? And the rest won't sit and collect wages as a few will be sold and a few are out of contract in the summer. Also I don't think any other staff have been sacked. Huge summer shake up on the horizon. Safc93

Agree1 Disagree0

Who told you that Head Coaches do not get involved in transfers?

Head Coach is just the continental term for a Manager.

Do you think Head Coaches in Spain & Italy are not involved in transfers? {Ed001's Note - no it is not a continental term for a manager, and no the head coaches in Spain and Italy do not get involved in transfers, other than to suggest areas of the team/squad they would like strengthened. Perhaps you should speak to one or two head coaches and managers and ask them about their differing roles, because the roles do differ massively.}

Agree0 Disagree1

''And the rest won't sit and collect wages as a few will be sold''

Name one club that would buy any Sunderland defenders and match their current wages?

Your wage whales are not going to take a pay cut, so strap yourself in and enjoy them riding your club until their contracts are out.

Agree0 Disagree1

Kk got it wrong and spit the dummy out

Agree0 Disagree0

Newcastle have one of the worst records for poor buying of overpaid players.

Half of fans support di canio and the other half don't like him. Either way what's done is done so yes or no will we survive? For me it's yes. Safc93

Believable6 Unbelievable2

Everyone I have spoke to can't wait for him to start there's not one I have spoke to who doesn't want him at the club

Martin O'neil was a proven premier league manager and look what happened! Di Canio deserves to be given a chance just like every other Sunderland manager there's been!

Believable4 Unbelievable4

Agree I think Di Canios been given a rough press! let's support the guy at least hell crack a few heads and to be honest we need that passion at the moment!

heres a post that someone printed in the sunderland echo

Something I picked up on a football forum.

Hope you don't mind a Swindon fan coming onto your site, but I really envy you having got Di Canio as your new coach. He came to us two years ago when we were rock bottom and raised the whole club, staff, players, fans and town to highs that had for many never been experienced before. Ignore all the stuff about his politics; if it exists we never saw it. What we did see was a man of passion, a man who wears his heart on his sleeve, a man who is a hard task master who believes in supreme fitness and will train his players for seven days a week if needs be. A man who works into the small hours watching videos of the opposing team so as to prepare his players for the next match.

Certainly you will be heading for a roller coaster of a ride as he speaks his mind and pulls no punches, if a player gets it wrong or does not pull his weight he will let them know about it and the rest of the world whilst about it. If a player does not have his heart fully in playing for your club, then they are out, no matter who they are, reputations mean nothing. You will find a man who recognises how important fans are and will wait until every player has acknowledged the fans and left the field before coming out to salute you.

You will have people who say they will stop going to matches because he has arrived, that though is their choice and to be honest they will be the losers. The pundits will give you a load of waffle, but the only ones who can tell you what great times lay ahead of you are us Swindon fans who have had the Di Canio experience. Just enjoy it.

Believable6 Unbelievable1

Thanks for that. This move is a huge gamble for our club. Feel better after hearing your opinion. Good luck to Swindon

I love how optimistic the fans were a few days ago - let's sack MON and bring in Moyes or Martinez (reaching high)

The club sacks him and appoints Di Crazio and everyone is actually relatively happy? I can't work out whether I have gone mad or everyone else has. He is not the calibre of manager we wanted or need!

Believable3 Unbelievable6

Do you not realise both of these managers have clubs where they are happy at the moment one is involved in a relegation battle every year and the other is doing well managing his club on a shoe string what makes you think any would do the job here

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Apr 2013 13:41:22
Let's face it, Hansen, Lawrenson and all the footballing press were always going to support ONeill just like they supported Reid - it was us real fans who knew just how bad Reid and indeed ONeill had become. As for Milliband, it is clear he was a Quinn appointment and that Mr Short has finally ousted all of the previous management. Quite frankly, it's Mr Shorts club so he should get in who he wants and if he feels Dicanio is the man, then Dicanio is the man we should support. Milliband is a disgrace to politics anyway and we will save £75k per annum - it's not as if he scored any goals or put in any tackles or crosses. We were down with ONeill and it's a huge risk with Dicanio but he may just ignite them. Sami Diglit, Whitley Bay.

Born and bred sunderland fan

Di Canio or not can we really see sunderland getting relegated with likes of reading, villa and qpr?

I'll be honest, I can't

And at the very least Di Canio should be given a chance

Why are people coming on and saying ` I was hoping for Di Canio ` etc? let's face it, he is unproven and the players and staff at Swindon couldn't wait to get rid of him. Another massive mistake by an owner who has no idea of running a football club.

Believable3 Unbelievable7

YES finally a sunderland fan who speaks sense, why not di matteo? actually prem proven and knows how to set up a team!

Agree1 Disagree5

Agree mate.

I wanted MON to stay.

(Bunch of fickle fans on here)

The players are the problem.

Jeez.

Agree3 Disagree3

We know that's not Jeez so please go away. also Di Matteo would never come up here to manage. What's the point? Give Di Canio a chance for goodness sake! He hasn't started yet and you want him out.

Agree3 Disagree1

Thought the prat had given up using my name, whatever.
I think it was time for Mon to go, he was clueless. Not sure about new head coach, but he can't do worse than Mon.
We all need to get behind him and support the team.
Pratdew will go at the end of the season.

Agree4 Disagree1

I could manage Chelsea, the squad they have

Clever from short naming dicanio as head coach instead of manager. Means he will get the team playing well but won't have a say with finances. Safc93

Bennisimo. Win or lose di Canio hits out at his players there's a vidio where a player scores and runs to him and the manager kicks him and says do what I've told you to do
