In my view Catamole delivers plenty of endeavour and commitment but very little class and little or no threat in front of goal, nor is his delivery anything to rave about - no doubt that is why he is a holding mid fielder - but when you consider he is also prone to making costly mistakes, I really do not consider him integral to our side - give me Ndye every time!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I have to disagree
Whilst Cattermoles work may not be pretty or crowd pleasing it is incredibly effective
It really annoys me when people ignore what he does, he breaks everything up, he stops attacks and doubles up with everyone around him, without Cattermole we would have conceded a hell of a lot more goals
He isn't goal creator or threat yes but it isn't his job to be, he may give the ball away a few times but 90% of the time he wins it back

Agree0 Disagree0

I for one am glad every time I see catts in the starting line up, therefore I agree with most of the previous post. However, i'm pretty sure catts provided 2 excellent defence splitting crosses/through balls in both of his first games back into the first team that we scored from.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes he did but that's 2 times in his whole Sunderland career, he has the ability to do so but it's just because he never really goes up field to do so which I'm glad about because if he's out of position, we are not in a good place

Excellent result against Manchester United - hopefully it shows our true potential to prospective signings - still think the return of ndye would be a big plus as a far superior option to catamole - also when we analyse our league form to date we need to keep sight of the fact we have played all the big boys at home now - so I am sure we can gather the points we need
At the stadium of light.

Cattermole has been very good for us

Gus knows it and has acknowledged it

Agree0 Disagree0

Might have been a great win but being at the game It wasnt all positive seeing as how so many 'diehard' fans who regularly go on forums such as this to spout off about how they crave success didn't even bother going to the game to get behind there team at a time when they thoroughly deserved your support seeing as it was a SEMI FINAL. can't use ticket prices as excuse. Just remember that when you feel hard done by those who know they sat in front of the telly making excuses not to go. Anyway know i'm going to get criticised by half you lot but will stand by my comments 100%.

Great result last night and Moyes really has his dummy out now. I thought the ref was more on their side, especially when he bottled sending Rafael off and played 6 mins of stoppage at the end!

Hopefully we can see it through at Old Trafford and I can see the lads at the new Wembley!

As for the team and transfers here are my thoughts: -

Mannone - Done Ok so keep but probably only good enough as a back up keeper

Bardsley - Brougth the fans back on side with dedicated performances so keep

Dossena - Not good enough so let him go back at end of loan

Brown - Tremdous player now he's fit so keep

Celustka - Average so keep until end of loan but don't sign

O'Shea - Improved with Brown alongside him but I would put him out to pasture

Diakite - If Italian clubs want him then sell him immediately

Cuellar - Sell immediately

Alonso - Too soon to say but in last nights performance possible permanent signing

Roberge - Lacks pace and strength so sell if clubs are interested

Ba - Looks promising so keep and give more chances

KI - Try to buy now!

Cabral - I have no idea what has gone on here. Best player in Asia and against Fulham then bang gone from team. Three managers not playing him so sell him immediately and make profit on free signing.

Seb - Average squad player so try to sell as he will leave end of season for free anyway

Gardner - Not good enough so same as Seb

Johnson - Not sure. Failed to meet the expected heights but if we can get him confident and playing well he is worth keeping.

Colback - Get his new contract sorted ASAP

Vaughan - Sell now

Karlsson - Looks promising so keep

Giaccherini - Too small and lacks pace for premier league so sell him

Catts - Good on his day but not good enough. Too much of a liability so I would sell him

Mavrias - Not seen enough of him yet so I would keep

Watmore - Promising, definite keeper for now

N'Diaye - I would give him another chance next season if we stay up as he was better than Catts, Vaughan, Seb and Gardner int the middle

Fletcher - If we get £10m sell, if not keep him. Lacking service so if we start creating then he will score

Wickham - If Forest are offering £5m take it as Championship is his level!

Altidore - affled how is plays so well abroad and for USA but struggles for us. Link up play is good so I would keep and hope his goes an a run of form

Ji - Just sell him now!

Borini - Assess after this seasons loan. Effort is good so possible signing but I would like to see him play up front and not on the wings.

Graham - Noone will sign him! Not even Bruce at Hull. £5m wasted!

I am sure plenty will disagree with this so hoping to get some comments to discuss.

•Mannone - top keeper, bargain buy
•Celuska - average, better under PDC
•Diakite - has potential, not shown it really, sell if necessary
•Roberge - better option that Diakite, keep
•O'Shea - brilliant with Brown, true partnership
•Brown - just take him to Brazil
•Bardsley - Heart os Sunderland
•Alonso - Brilliant Debut, a little too early though
•Dossena - terrible
•Cattermole - Does his job, incredibly effective
•Ki - cool, calm, pinpoint passing, great
•Cabral - something's gone wrong, loan
•Colback - new contract!
•Ba - very promising
• Larsson - works hard, inconsistent though
•Giaccherini - no impact on game, sell
• Gardner - fu*k off
• Vaughan - go with Gardner
•Johnson - Becoming the player we thought we bought
•Borini - brilliant works hard all the time, always a threat
•Mavrias - Looks a quick, skilful winger, give him a chance
•Karlsson - one for the future

Nice to see we agree on the majority Mr Makem. If they take note of us we might do ok :-)

Agree0 Disagree0

Yea you's have got that just about right but you's forgot about Westwood who is also out of contract in the summer. Thought he was a good keeper but after the start of the season not so sure.

Basically we have a small squad of which most will be leaving as out of contracts, returned to there clubs to old and not good enough. Hope the board have a plan as they need to get it right over the next two transfer window. We need a whole new squad of player

Agree0 Disagree0

Shame as I had expected a few more comments on this post!

Reading it back myself and Mr Makem are basically saying that these are the only players we would keep between us. I have excluded the loan players as these are not ours and would need to be signed: -

Westowood
Mannone

Bardsley
Brown
O'Shea
Roberge

Ba
Cattermole
Johnson
Colback
Mavrias
Karlsson

Altidore
Watmore

This is not much of a first team as some are still at development level let alone a squad good enough to be premier league.

A lot of clear out work is required and 'Quality' signings required so this month is going to be very interesting.

Agree0 Disagree0

Scary when you look at it like that. Even scarier is that four of them are kids, three of them are out of contract in the summer and not sure what will happen with them and will we get another season out of brown and o'shea? We need twenty plus players!

I know he has his critics, but I think we play better when Seb is in the team.
Looking round the Stadium last night I was shocked by the attendance, a semi final with reduced entrance fee! unbelievable.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

He's better against the big boys, sometimes he lacks in quality but he busts a guy wherever he goes, Carrick had Seb snapping at his heels all night
He's in te team because Poyet likes his play and Poyet says he 'gets it'

got to laugh at moyes now saying they were playing against the ref
watch all our previous games david and see what its actually like to play against 12 men every game its about time we got the luck of the ball
your fergie luck is disappearing
well done to the lads last night you could see man u's game growing in style and confidence but we battled and got the right result and what a debut for alonso

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Go to the man u supporters sites they are even blaming the wind, great stuff.

What do you think Gus should do with the outcasts? Cabral, Dossena, Diakite, Roberge etc. Keep some of them, sell/ loan all of them

Thoughts?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Cabral situation is particularly frustrating as he arrived with a decent reputation, got good reviews pre season and played well against Fulham. I'd like to know what's gone wrong because Cattermole still scares me to death in that position.

Anyway, whens Insigne signing?

Great win for the Lads tonight - Alonso looks promising, Johnson looks like the real deal and the defence coped pretty well.

The Manchester team only excelled as whining to ref - after almost every decision that went against them, at half time, when players were booked etc etc - its plain to see where the problem is at Manchester United - their discipline is poor now the threat of the hairdryer is gone. Their attitude was shocking, if Moyes doesn't fix that we've every chance in a fortnight. Here's hoping.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yep, great result
Sorry to put a downer on things people but I think we will get relegated, but it's probably for the best

I think Poyet has pretty much found his strongest team, when transfers arrive, there will be changes though

I think the best team we have is the one we put out tonight with the exception of Giaccherini, let's be honest he's done nowt for us, and what Johnson showed lately he is becoming the better option, he looks hungry for the WC, we need a striker, we don't have any, apparently we turned down an 8m offer from Hull for Fletch, he needs to sort his game out or he's had it, Altidore… can't be ar$ed to go through it

We need a playmaker that is a given,

We win the games we really shouldn't be winning, why, because of the game we play, we have a very very competitive hearty group of players when it comes to big teams as we expect to be pressured a lot, we defend valiantly and break on the counter attack and make the most of chances because it will be very uplifting and fantastic whereas when we play the Aston Villas the West Hams etc, we don't go about business in the same manner because there isn't the intensity and desire to compete, we think that if we give them the opportunities they could fail and when it comes to goals we don't have the edge because their isn't belief, we go about it as if we will get more opportunities but we don't, we get caught sleeping all the time as the players aren't properly switched on

Gus is a fantastic manager and we are now seeing potential in players, that said we will get beat and not show the commitment we saw tonight, he is unlucky that he came straight after PDC who pretty much pulled the pin on the grenade and shove it down our pants,
First he had to sort the players mentality out, then make them believe and now he is sort of on the line of getting the results we need, sort of

If we get relegated so be it, I'm not gunna cry, it will be good for the club we can get rid of the sh*t we have, bring in a FEW signings to sure things up, use the Youth system (Ba, Karlsson, Watmore, Mavrias etc) get everyone on the same wave length and come straight back up and proceed, much like Southampton except they did this over moving up in leagues

I hope we stay up
We can stay up, if we have a good January and the players are up for it

But
Good teams get relegated sometimes
