Well it was a miraculous escape, for which we are very thankful, but we can't really expect to repeat the performance in future. So we need to put together a squad that won't need miracles. There have been a half dozen departures, as well as the return of loan players, and only a couple of arrivals. Yet we still have around 24 players in the first team squad- although seven or eight of them would not get into most Championship squads.
The back four have to be the priority, much as we need a midfielder who consistently drives us forward. Bardsley, Dossena, Cuellar. Alonso and Vergini have gone. Two midfielders who have offered regular cover at fullback, Gardner and Colback, have gone too. All we have left are Brown, O'Shea, Diakite and Roberge, and recent arrival Jones. So we have to bring in four solid defenders, or we will be losing to the bottom six teams again next season. We have been linked with some canny players- Williams, Davies, bringing back Alonso- and we should be getting on with that now. Given the benefit of staying up is about £70m, spending £15m- if it takes that- to get two central defenders who can still run and are not frequently injured would be a modest outlay, as would signing Alonso permanently. So we need to be decisive rather than cautious- get those players in and find another who can play at the back, then if we can land someone like Banega or Meireles we will have a much better balanced team, and all for around £20m outlay.

I think that with Wickham and a rejuvenated Altidore, as well as possibly a fit Fletcher, a goal scorer is less of a priority money back for Scocco/ something for Graham?). Better to look for additional goals from midfield, Gomez, maybe Banega and Mutch, than to recruit another big name striker that we then render impotent through the enormous weight of expectation we place on him.
So let's get on with the business, and put together a side that is hard to beat and can make the SoL the fortress Roker once was, then we might hope to kick on further in future seasons.

Sorry but am I the only person who will not lose a single moment of sleep now that Colback has gone to the barcodes? The transfer tells us all that they have no money to spend and their level of ambition is nil as they have taken a player of little talent as, in their own words, as a major coup. Don't get me wrong, the Ginger Judas did an adequate job as a "play anywhere we are short" stand in, but can anyone tell me, honestly that, as we look forward to a brighter future, we will be moulding a team that would have him in it? And before I am challenged about my knowledge of people who have had the honour to wear the red and white stripes, I have been watching them home and away for nearly 50 years. He did ok but in the future true SAFC fans will be saying Jack who? Gone and most definitley forgotten!

No you are not. I agree with you. No player is bigger than the club and certainly the £10.5 million NUFC will pay Colback over the next five years is way above his actual worth.

Well Colback is now confirmed as a ginger Skunk. Sad to lose a grafter from the academy on a free but he brought nothing better than Catts or Bridcutt . He had decided to leave before our upgraded contract so glad to see it all finalised and over.

Out of devilment I hope he warms then bench and comes on at left back!
