Let's be realistic here. We need to shift the high earners off the wage bill to allow us to purchase new. This means Cabral, N'Diaye, Diakite, Roberge, Scocco and Graham all need to get their transfers out sorted before we can commit to quality replacements.
I know others have left so we have funds from their wages being removed but Lee Congerton has stated he wants to buy quality and not just players for the sake of it. Plus we have signed three others to replace some of these so fees and wages will need to be paid there.
I personally think we need at least the following: -
LB - Hopefully Alonso with Diakite going the other way
2 x CB - I would hijack QPR's deal for Caulker if possible and hopefully get Zouma on loan from Chelsea
CM/ACM - If we are staying British then get Mutch from Cardiff as well. He proved he can graft and has attacking capabilities. Possibly Rodwell as well but not on loan. City will sell so get him on the books now. If they do go loan at least have a clause stating an agreed fee to purchase if his spell is successful.
St - Not sure here. A fit Fletcher, Whickham with a newly signed contract and Altidore with a bit confidence might just do us. I would forget Borini as he obviously does not want to come here permanently
Ed's. Are there any other realistic targets out there as opposed to hopeful speculation one?
{Ed024's Note - I'm not hearing anything on a new striker - Poyet may be waiting to see how Fletcher copes with pre season. Its well known that Poyet wants Vergini and Alonso, and the Andy Mutch rumours don't seem to be going away. Rod Fanni (Marseille) is a possibility, if Vergini falls through I wouldn't be surprised if we put in a cheeky bid for Nedum Onuoha}

Onuoha did quite well for us, and Caulker is a very good prospect, which underlines how much stronger most of the competition are growing while we continue to struggle. When the main headline featuring Sunderland in the transfer market relates to the manager's son joining WH, it is hard to believe that this window is going to be much better than the previous ones.
It's hard to understand why we aren't getting the players in
Surly Gus must realise that if you field the same players that were so extremely close to getting the club relegated they will produce near enough the same results (tbh, the team is considerably weaker at the moment)
He surly realises this won't he? Won't he?!?

I agree with all the players that should be leaving and I think these are the type of players Poyet should be looking at bringing in. Wasted talent at the clubs they are currently at.
RB- Micah Richards
CB- Steven Caulker, Charlie Mulgrew, Eric Dier
LB- Marcos Alonso
CM- Jack Rodwell
Wingers- Nathan Redmond, Scott Sinclair, Tom Ince
Attacking Mid/Striker- Michu, Joel Campbell

I forgot about Richards as he is a definite target I would go after.
Not sure Mulgrew will be up to the PL as I don't rate the Scottish League. Don't know much about Dier but might be one for the future rather than a first team player now.
Ince has signed for Hull, Redmond is middle of the road and not really better than we've had and Sinclair just isn't up to the level he needs to be.
Michu was a one season wonder in my opinion so I'd keep away from him and Campbell I watched at the world cup and could not see what the commentators we seeing to say he was playing well.
Lots of work to do and I agree it is concerning that our deals always seem to take time to sort while other clubs steam in and get their targets (and some of ours)!

Sinclair just doesn't get game time at all. Two seasons ago when he was playing week in week out he was quality! Redmond showed signs of his talent last year in his first season in the premier league and is still young, I think to sign Jack Rodwell is a must, he will replace Jack Colback easily! Michu was injured a lot of last season and struggles to get into the seansea side ahead of Bony as he is class! The thing is they are realistic signings and mainly British players!
How about a cheeky bid for Jonny Evans?
