Quinn explains Gyan loan move
Sep 12 2011
Chairman Niall Quinn has outlined the five reasons which prompted Sunderland to accept a loan offer from Al-Ain for striker Asamoah Gyan.
The Ghana international sealed a lucrative season-long deal with the United Arab Emirates club on Saturday, less than 48 hours after informing Sunderland boss Steve Bruce of his desire to fight for his place at the Stadium of Light. Bruce revealed his frustration after the weekend loss to Chelsea, implying Gyan had moved solely for financial gain.
But Quinn on Monday confirmed Sunderland had their reasons for letting their record signing depart and in a statement on the club's official website, he said: "From the moment Asamoah returned for pre-season training we could tell that there were people trying to move him on."
He added: "We hoped it would pass by, rebuking approaches from the Premier League, France and Turkey and felt the player would settle back down and continue to help our cause.
"Throughout this time we were also receiving real interest from Al-Ain, but it looked as if that too had lost momentum by last Wednesday.
"Steve spoke to Asamoah on Thursday morning, asking him to knuckle down and we were all set to move on. Later that day however Al-Ain began a prolonged effort to get the deal back on track and this turned the player's attentions once more to a possible move.
"Come Friday, the chairman of Al-Ain and his advisors had flown into Newcastle and arrived at our training ground to discuss a potential deal for Asa.
"They were very professional but determined to sign the player and at this point we took a number of things into consideration: the player's obviously negative demeanour in and around the training ground.
"The fact that the transfer window in the UAE had over 50 days remaining, meaning this was unlikely to go away; the clear desire of the player to leave; the forthcoming African Nations Cup, which would have meant losing Asamoah for up to six weeks in the new year; the obvious economic benefits to our club in the terms of the final deal laid out to us.
"In the early hours of Saturday morning chief executive Margaret Byrne and myself agreed a loan deal to allow Asamoah his wish to move but that would also, and more importantly, protect the club should things not work out for the player
He told us why he couldn't say anything earlier. The deal wasn't officially finalised untill yesterday afternoon. As soon as it was he released a statement. There are very few teams in this country who could hang onto a player when they are being offered 200 grand a week! Not even Arsenal could with Nasri. I say good riddance. He obviously has no real passion for the game of football or he would want to stay and prove himself in one of the best leagues in the world. At least Bendtner (although a bit arrogant at times) has said that he wants to be the best striker in the world. That shows ambition even if he never reaches those heights
70 grand a week tax free he is on. Wake up numpty, if they were going to pay 200 grand a week they would have went for a TOP player.
Which TOP player would go and play there football in UAE? Give me a name of someone who is realistically any better than Gyan who would go and play in that league. Everywhere I have read 200 grand has been quoted as his wage. What do you think he's gone for like-the challenge or the quality of the football? Plus he is donating a large monthly lump sum to Sunderland foundation which suggests to me his wages must be rather hefty. If he was giving a large donation on 70grand a week then surely he wouldn't be that much better off.I digress-my point was that we're better off without someone like that in our squad.
What par5t of TAX FREE do you not understand?????
Drogba,Anelka,Owen,Berbatov,Crouch,Jones,Defoe,Pavlechenco,Keane,Carroll,Suaze Bent, Do you want me to name more who are better than Gyan? ALL of them would play in UAE as they, like every footballer, have one thing in common, GREED
Well for a start Keane, Defoe, Crouch, Pav and Jones aren't any better than Gyan when he is playing well. The rest may be better than Gyan but majority were in a position to negotiate big money moves away from there clubs this summer and didn't. Why? Because at least 3 or 4 of them will be on top dollar anyway. But the other reason-Ego. They know they need to be in a great league to gain the recognisition they crave. Wasn't Suarez wanted by City and Liverpool? I haven't mentioned anything about tax! I spoke only of a huge monthly donation he is apparantly making to Sunderland foundation. You've heard 70grand tax free-I've heard 200grand tax free! Probably somewhere in the middle is about right. Yes it is an obscene amount for someone of his talent and he shouldn't be getting anywhere near that amount. Do I believe it is possible he is getting paid that amount.Yes because Ive seen Liverpool pay 50million for Carroll + Henderson.
Its a good article in the Echo entitled "Sunderland chairman Quinn explains Gyan departure". Read all of it on the Echo site and realise the Club has worked out an excellent deal under the circumstances. We also have an excellent Chairman. Better than I would be, coz I would make Gyan stay and play in the reserves for a year at crappy rain swept grounds all winter watched by 20 fans each time. See how he likes it in the real world.
I agree. Quinn is always right on the mark for me. Honest, considered and reasonable
So Quinn got rid of Gyan why are posts on this site giving SB grief fo Gyan departure.Quinn new he wanted out and didn't get SB a replacement.Sounds as though you fans have been mugged by the Chairman like those at Nufc
To lose one top striker (KJ) is unfortunate, losing a second top striker (DB) is utterly careless Then to lose a third top striker (AG) is undoubtably incompetence.
Please tell me how Niall Quinn has never learned the lesson and nipped this one in the bud instead of letting it fester again as happened with Jones and Bent.
