Toon lad here. I wish Pardew had half the passion the DiCanio had. maybe too much to soon but he cared

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Pardew does, he just doesn't fall out with half the squad and let's the players out at night to go to the pub!

Agree0 Disagree0

How can you say that Pardew does not have passion?

Remember the game he jumped in and celebrated with the fans, he looked like he had been dragged through a hedge when he came back from out from the crowd, but he didn't care, he was celebrating the goal.

Remember Pardew's fights with Ferguson and MON?

Remember his banter with Drogba after Cisse scored that goal.

Am I missing something here?

I sincerely hope you are not a Newcastle fan, coming on the Sunderland page and slating your own manager.

That is low. Disappointed.

OMG did not expect PDC to be sacked just yet, I thought he would have another 6 games to turn it around. I will always be grateful he saved us last season and for his dirty knees v the scum. He wore his heart on his sleeve which may have added to his sacking with his public critiscism of players.
Whoever comes in as new manager needs the fans behind him as well as the players and fast as how many games will they be given, another gone by Xmas if all goes tits up. I cannot blame Ellis Short as it is his cash he gambled with and let's face it he came when we needed him.
Jesus wot a mess, still think we will stay up though

Well it seems all the haters have got their way. I for one think he should have been given a lot more time. Who in their right mind would bring in a manager and let him make changes from top to bottom, and then sack him after 5 league games? Our club has been used to so much mediocrity for years, and even if it took a relegation and promotion for him to bring his whole winning philosophy and mentality into the club, then so be it! Newcastle may be above us in the league table, but this has just shot is to the top of the league when it comes to making us look a laughing stock! Whoever comes in now still has to work with the numerous changes that were made during the summer, and then maybe next summer we have yet another total overhaul! When is this going to end? The only person I can really point the finger at at the moment is Mr Ellis Short!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The only person we can truly trust on to try and get it right is Mr Ellis short, we should not be giving all our faith to whatever manager is next or the one after that but to Mr short because at the end of the day its his money that's being ploughed into the team and it will be he who decides if we fall at first hurdle or go on to become a team with real desire and passion all Mr Short has done wrong is to show confidence in each and every manager that's been recommended to him, so we should be saying in Ellis we trust, just keep the faith and don't forget the badge Mr Ellis short was wearing, FTM.

Agree0 Disagree0

I am 71 years old and first went to Roker Park when I was 9. I have seen all the ups and downs, Paulo had to go to give us a chance. I have been saying for weeks that he needed to change his system to accommodate the players in the squad. Playing two wingers in the Prem. without having two strong central midfielders is stupid and irresponsible. and winning Prem. teams do not play with two strikers.

Agree0 Disagree0

I for one applaud Ellis Short.
How many more games do you think we needed to squander?
The players were brought in by RDF with the sanction of Di Canio and therefor all the changes are not wasted.
He kept us up last season for which I am eternally grateful, but we were heading back there this season.
He was given a chance and failed, live with it and get behind the new manager.
Let us dream it is Di Matteo.
Thanks but it WAS time to go.

Agree0 Disagree0

And the award for the most fickle football 'supporter' in the world goes to Jeez! Congratulations mate, who's going to be the next 'messiah' that you trust for half a dozen games?

No name

Agree0 Disagree0

I have stated all along that I did not agree with his appointment. I also stated that even so, he had my full support.
He kept us up and is a hero for doing so.
He was given a chance and failed.
How is that fickle, no name?

Disgracefull we have given PDC only 13 games and then given him the sack typical sunderland not giving the manager enough time

7SAFC7

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Not a sunderland a fan but i'm embarrassed that a manager brings in 16players and sacked after 5 games in the prem, ridiculous

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed024's Note - Players turned on him - what option did Short have ?}

Di Canio didn't bring them in Di Fanti did.
Di Canio was meant to manage them and didnt.
The board had no choice.
They should be applauded for decisiveness.

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed if there is a disagreement at sol then surely the best option would of been for ellis short to call a meeting between all the players and pdc and his staff sit down sort the differences out and tell them to act like men not kids the players have done nothing but let the club down. I know we have Liverpool at home next week and tickets will have been sold but I will be interested to see the attendance as a lot of fans I know said this is the final straw and won't be going again

sly italia reported at 6pm that pdc was sacked and Roberto di matteo was to be named as our new manager.

22 Sep 2013 22:14:29
im not going to blame the players or the management board. I've followed sunderland for over 40 years took my kids when they were old enough to understand, home and away through the good times and the bad and I must state more bad than good. but today is the lowest I can rememeber as a fan 5 games into the season and we sack our manager well that is the end for me I don't think I will be visiting the sol for a long time.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I have followed Sunderland since I was old enough to go to a match.
I will follow Sunderland till I am too old to go to a match.
Get behind the new manager if you are a real supporter.

Agree0 Disagree0

Jeez I am a real supporter have been to most of the grounds in england with sunderland. but i'm thinking to myself why should I waste my money to go and watch players who have behaved appalling on the field and off. I totally understand if pdc has been sacked because of the results but I don't think that is the reason mate. when we have a club who is run by the players and not the manager it stinks what if the next managers face doesn't fit will he be sacked at xmas. I just wish short had the balls to show the players behind this revolt the door starting with bardsley who will most probably get another chance even after laughing about the team. for me the whole set up stinks and I never thought I would say this but I've had my fill with the club and can't see myself going again for a while.

Mag here and I'm astonished. 5 games into the new season, PDC got his signings in, rebuilding your squad but 5 games in 4 losses 1 draw and you sack him? I'm sorry but that is hardly any time for a manager get results and help the team gel. You have a very disgruntled squad now, and it was a suicidal move by short to sack him so early, unless you get in a decent manager like di matteo, you's will be in serious trouble.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Dunno where everyone gets the idea Di MAtteo's a good manager, won champions league with somebody elses team, if he was any good Chelsea would have kept him

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think the Sunderland fans like the idea of Tony Pulis, but I think if they honestly asked themselves, which manager could come in and give them the best chance of survival, you would have to say Pulis. It is what Pulis does.

He is not a long term solution, his football is pretty brutal lol, but it is effective.

Pulis on a 2 year deal, and they could let him go at the end of the season if they want to switch it up, would make sense.

Di Matteo is not going to come in and turn things around.

This is a manager that was sacked by West Brom because they did not think he was good enough for the step up to Premier League level.

His achievements at Chelsea came from parking the bus, and almost miracle type luck.

Agree0 Disagree0

For the first time as a life long fan of Sunderland I can only say- i'm done. I would have stuck. with PDC even if he took us down if it meant changing the ethos and philosophy of the club and moving to a place where we actually play football. Gutted. We have officially taken over as laughing stock of the NE. I have a feeling this decision will come back to haunt us.

Agree0 Disagree0

Man Utd had their worst start to a season for 10 years and just been thrashed in their derby game. £27M spent on one player who looks poor today. Think they'll sack Moyes? No way.

Agree0 Disagree0

Supposedly Sunderland sacked PDC because he had a bust up with the senior players.

I was always up for
"In Paolo we trust"

But Iv had a long think about this and to be honest I think his time is up, which is a shame because he has done so much for the club in only a few months but its his behaviour which kills him, he saved us from relegation, he changed the whole team, all credit to him he deserves a season, he is a fantastic character and I love him, as do many but there is 2 reasons why he has let us and himself down

1. Team change / our first two games we were unlucky, deserved a win against Fulham and unlucky to hold on against Southampton, but for some bizzare reason he changed the team against Crystal Palace, got thumped and then he had to change the team again, he needs to stick with his best team or we will never, ever, ever get any results

2. Criticism / you cannot criticise the players in front of the public, absolutely lash them infront of everybody and make them look and feel like sh*t. A Manager cannot do that, it's the lowest of the low, the players just won't have any morale, they'll be scared to take people on and shoot etc, they will be shaken as hell, yes he is the boss but he needs to show respect, saying the players "have rubbish in their mind" is getting the club absolutely nowhere, they are his players, he needs to manage them and he needs to make sure they get the results

If he stays, I'm cautious
If he goes, I'm cautious

Now that fletcher's out injured for what could be a lengthy layoff with what looked a very heavy and nasty fall will we still persist with two up top or revert back to just one up top with one behind because I don't really rate any of the back up striker's and that include's altidore who has looked woeful since he has arrived and do we now have to change our way of play as if altidore is choosen as that lone striker we can no longer play ball up to him in the air as he hasn't yet figured out how to jump and head the ball or is either not interested in challenging for the ball meaning that it is a clean header every time for the centre half also if it is to be the latter option then how about trying giacherini as the man behind as he look's completely lost out on the left wing if you do not believe me just watch yesterday's game again didn't try once to beat his man but just kept playing the ball back poorly to colback and again he didn't track back to give cover to colback who in the end I felt sorry for as he was just getting over run and when he finally found some space his delivery was shall we say politely crap not once playing a ball in behind the centre half's and giving them a problem but instead electing to try and find player's arriving at the edge of the box meaning it was meat and drink to there defence and hence his substitution at half time also one last point now that cattermole is back in favour with di canio should we make him the captain again as I and a lot of people around me at the game are not convinced that o'shea is really leadership material and never seem's to be encouraging the team when we fall behind as I think he has enough problem's concentrating on getting his own performance right and yesterday when cattermole came on he seemed to take over that role of firing up the player's up to try and push on and we created our two best chance's of the game immediately after

Mag here in peace.

Ok, so this page seems to have got to the point where there are a lot of questions being asked about PDC now. Here's what I see are the problems:

1. Di canio is like marmite, you either love him or you hate him, but managers shouldn't be like that. you can't have players been scared or nervous or don't even like playing under him. Some people will find that his management style is too intense and too restrictive, which a lot of players won't like but some with great work ethic will.
2. He's not very good in interviews, e. g. criticising a player in public should never happen.
3. You shouldn't of sold sessegnon especially to another PL team, at least get a replacement. And why did you loan out n'diaye? I was really impressed by his season under PDC, a great strong box to box midfielder! Another clueless move.
4. Your team and signings have hardly any experience, and could take up to about 8 months to fully gel. Although you did bring in 14 players with a net spend lower than 20mil, but are they good value for money?

I think PDC will be a good manager, but I think the premier league is a bit out of his depth at the moment, he needs to get a bit more experience in management, maybe in the championship, in foreign leagues etc.

I see we've reached that all to familiar stage already where the 'SACK HIM' V 'GIVE HIM TIME' argument has reared it's ugly head.
Personally I'm not sure what some fans expect from a football club that has been such perennial under achievers.
Lets look at the cold hard facts for a moment, apart from two purple patch seasons under Peter Reid we've been in decline for 60 years. Take a look at our final league positions since Reidy left and ask yourself again why no decent players want to come and play there football for SAFC. Our highest league position in 13 years has been a very fortunate 10th under a manager who wasnt given the lickings of a dog! Some fans not old enough may like to take up an invitation to see where our club was in the 80's.
Having a big shiny 49K capacity stadium and throwing millions and millions of pounds at hasbeens and flops doesn't give you the right to be a decent EPL side.
A team, a club has to be moulded and structured over time. Teams like Liverpool and Everton have struggled for a good few years now to regain former prowess but in doing so retain there beliefs of how the game should be played. A model followed by the likes of Swansea and Aston Villa.
We on the other hand throw all caution to the wind and with it millions of pounds to the latest fall guy we nail are colours to. Believing there style of play will bring a new dawn to a sadly down beat football club. Has this strategy bore us any fruit. No, none at all!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Lets get reid back then

Agree0 Disagree0

Yes a Club has to be moulded over time. Well, when are you lot going to give it time. Everyone wants instant success. This is a wholesale rebuild of the club, not just the team. It will take time. A lot longer than 5 or 10 games. The structure has been changed throughout. This was necessary when Di Canio took over because the Club was in a mess. He has had to clear out the considerable amount of utter dross that was swanning around taking mega wages and giving nothing in return. Players unfit and undisciplined, and useless hanger-on like Miliband bleeding the Club dry.
It has all had to be sorted out from top to bottom and the process is still ongoing and will be for some time.
We all must be patient and stop talking about sacking a manager after 5 games. This type of knee-jerk reaction is not the answer. Hopefully we will be OK but we have had no luck so far (Altidore's goal last week should have stood and Fletcher's injury this week is hard to swallow).
Maybe we should brace ourselves to go down and come back stronger after rebuilding, even if it is tough to take. Although I would prefer to stay up even if we are 4th bottom at the end of the season. Then we can push on next season but we need some stability now or we will definitely go down.

Agree0 Disagree0

Instant success!! how many years do you want us to wait.

Agree0 Disagree0

I don't think pdc will be given any more time as di matteo is the next manager so the Italion connection will still be there shame as I like pdc but results are what matter

Agree0 Disagree0

Marco. What are you actually saying should happen next. Given where we are now do we sack Paolo, do we give him more time or do we just wish different things had happened years ago? Personally I think the only thing to do at this point is stick to the plan.

9 points from 12 games under Di Canio. Marginally better than the 3 from 8 that sank O'Neill, but still unacceptable. His clumsy management has alienated some players, while despite the posturing he has failed to get rid of the most corrosive influences at the club, and he has favoured some players (donkeys like O'Shea!) while marginalising others (why has Cabral been dropped when he looked livelier than most?), which does nothing for squad morale or motivation. Worse, his clownish behaviour is an embarrassment we could do without- there is enough to laugh at on the pitch without a comedian for a manager. It was hard to see how we could get someone more inept than O'Neill, but we have. I do wonder how Short made his fortune when he appears to have so little understanding of what makes an organisation successful. He will be remembered as someone who spread mediocrity at all levels throughout the club. When I reflect on what the likes of Everton have achieved on smaller budgets, I am appalled at the habitual incompetence we reward so handsomely on and off the pitch. The team's performances are shameful. The 'management' is pathetic.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

The most disappointing thing for me is that PDC's system seems to be completely impotent in the premier league. We are far to easily dispossessed or simply pushed back with absolutely no penetration in attack. Who would want to be a Sunderland forward. Playing with wingers for christ-sake!

Agree0 Disagree0

Giancherrini subbed at half time is symbolic of what is going on.

PDC's record signing, he cannot get the best out of the player, so instead of attempting to work with players, he works against them.

Say what you want about MON, but he was good to his players, and he loved Sunderland, he could have managed other (bigger) clubs but he choose you lot because that is where his heart was. Why on earth did you let him go?

Btw: It was MON's team that beat us. Don't think that PDC waving him arms on the sidelines contributed to that win.

MON was tipped for Man Utd - I think you missed a trick there.

Agree0 Disagree0

You must be a mag coz your are talking drivvle, Martin o'neill lost the plot and I bet you lot were hoping we kept him coz we wouldn't of hammered you lot 0-3 and would of got relegated last season, 1 win will change the players mentality but at the moment everything is going wrong for us including luck

Agree0 Disagree0

Look at the clues! All your hopes for PDC are based on that win against Newcastle.

Now tell me, how long was PDC in charge when Sunderland got that win? Exactly.

What has PDC done since that win against Newcastle?

Surely if PDC turned around your fortunes you would be getting better since his arrival, instead it has got worse. (Apart from a win he got after coincedentally just arriving at the club, which was in essence MON's team)

Agree0 Disagree0

N'Diaye shipped out on loan, PDC basically burning nearly 5 million, replaces him with Cabral, then decides Cabral is rubbish.

What is that all about?

Agree0 Disagree0

The point is PDC motivated Sunderland to hammer the skunks in their own back yard, not O'Neil.
We beat a very poor side that day. But we beat a very good Everton side the next game.

Agree0 Disagree0

There has been mixed reports about Cabral

Agree0 Disagree0

''The point is PDC motivated Sunderland to hammer the skunks in their own back yard, not O'Neil.
We beat a very poor side that day. But we beat a very good Everton side the next game. ''

Do you really think the Sunderland players need motivated to play Newcastle, are you telling me the players would not have been up for that game if PDC was not there?

Surely not.

PDC did nothing in that win over Newcastle, he was a passenger in a suit on the sidelines, I know you all enjoyed his theatrics, but that was MON's team, his training, they will drilled by MON.

How can you honestly believe PDC can change a club overnight.

Agree0 Disagree0

O'Neills training? O'neill had them low on confidence and his training was awful, mag if your comment is rubbish, PDC hammered his authoirity into those players and got them fired up for that derby, O'neill would of told them they look nice and we would of lost the next 5 games

Agree0 Disagree0

Hey sad Maggie, you can twist it and turn it any way you like, but the 0-3 hammering will always be remembered as the "DIRTY KNEES DI CANIO DEMOLITION DERBY".
