Depressing as the annual ritual is- speculation about almost everyone available, abject failure to lure good players to the club, reduced ambitions and a focus on the bargain basement as the season gets closer- it is doubly depressing to see that after the dismal pursuit of Willliams, a 19 year old loanee from Chelsea is the only centre-back who seems to be on the radar. It would be foolhardy to start the season without at least two additional central defenders. While waiting until Roberge and Diakite can be offloaded from the wage-bill may seem sensible, as they are both bargain basement material themselves I can see us missing the boat again if we don't take a more decisive approach. Already, it is hard to identify any centre-backs with Premier experience who are still likely to move during this window.

My friend works in the Springwell Health Centre where Dr Gough is based (Sunderlands club dr) and he's been told that Alonso's medical is booked in today

Believable4 Unbelievable12

He's not the club Dr anymore, and hasn't been for a few year now, so your friend doesn't know anything.

Two defenders hopefully. I think that we need 3 in to bolster the back line. 1 winger which looks to be either borini or Rodriguez and a striker. I'd look to bring in a striker on loan because if our current crop start to fire I think we are in a good position in that area of the field. My biggest worry now is that our two veteran CBs will not complete a full season and I would happily put money on that. We are just not that lucky. Diakete went off injured last night which could cause a problem moving him out of the club leaving us stuck with his wages. N'diaye has looked good in the past two friendlies but is that due to the opposition? I think so

Why is it that with other clubs deals go through quicker easier than us? Is it Congleton as Gus has said he is the man doing the deals so is Congleton up to the job? because surely these deals aren't that complicated or perhaps we need another director of football?

Agree1 Disagree5

Two things. Firstly deals aren't just a matter of rocking up and saying "We want him" and the other club saying"ok, no problem" They take time and a lot of effort behind the scenes

Secondly if you are going to question a bloke's ability and cast doubts on his suitability to do a job for the club at least get his name right.

Borini deal off SAFC are not willing to wait till he gets back from pre season tour of the USA. Poyet wanted 4 signings in before Portugal tour after our 3 free transfers and so far has none. Some press seem to think that poyet had a fall out with some board members for haggling to much for players which lead to short stepping in and allowing him to bid 14mil for Borini but the player doesn't want the move. Poyet said after tonight's game he is going to have to changed tour plans as transfers are going very slow. Heard SAFC has asked arsenal for j. campbell on loan who would no doubt be instead of Borini. So far we are haggling for Rodregez and Alonso on permanent deals Zouma and Campbell on loan.

Believable6 Unbelievable7

I doubt he's falling out with the board

We don't need to wait till after he's come back from America, we are in talks with him and his agent, if he agrees he will fly back to England ASAP and sign
If think the Zouma thing is gone
Rodriguez is looking like it could stand a chance of happening
Fiorentina apparently want €5m blus Diakite (being greedy tw@ts)
