well i'm hoping we are not done in the transfer market as people are mentioning some decent names on sunderland sites but i'm concerned about a lot of the deadwood we need to clear off our books some players who are not good enough bridcutt buckley fletcher wickham johnson manone gomez mavrias brown o'shea roberge graham in my opinion others on here will have their own but all are a drain on the finances of the club which restricts us on the type of players we can sign if we could get 4 or 5 of these off the books as some are on that high wages not many clubs can afford to take them if we can i'm sure we would be able to bring a few more decent players in to the club dick says he is having a meeting with short tomorrow to see what we have left to spend and this doesn't sound good as i'm sure most fans will be worried about this I can see us making one more signing if we can't get rid of any of these and maybe take advantage of the loan system before the transfer window closes. also if we get stuck with alvarez we might have done our transfer business.

Gary you are spot on We are top heavy with players who if we retain for another season will relegate us.Most of these players have been at our club for a few seasons and have got into the habit of losing nearly every game as long as they get megabucks for nowt.Unless Dick can sort them out, and get them out of our club,we will be relegated this season.

Would love to see all 12 of them moved out. We will struggle to stay in prem with them in squad. Championship players at best.

How can you say Johnson is championship at best. He is arguably one of the most gifted players we have in our squad. Would be a huge loss if his legal situation went negative. Gomez is going to be cover along with fletcher. Whickham is good just needs to toughen up and brown and oshea won't be moved considering brown has just been given a new contract and oshea was ever present last season. If yu honestly believe we could get rid of 12 players and cope we would be in trouble.

We could always buy better replacements. That is the way to improve. FTM might have got conditioned into accepting mediocre or even woefull. I am personally sick of under achievers who we pay fortunes to. Bring back jeff whitley. Ay!

How naive. You can not replace an entire squad and expect to survive. PDC tried that and look where it got him!

Yes we need to clear out some poor players in high wages but be realistic , how many top quality players can we attract to a relegation battling club in an area so far away from London!

Its not an entire squad. Its 12 players who are not good enough. It didn't work with them so we won't miss them. Show them the door let dick get 3 - 4 quality replacements and supplement the squad with our youngsters. Other clubs do this and prosper. We are a big club and deserve a better team. At least dick realises that most of that lot need to go. let's see how many of the dozen are still there at the end of the transfer window.

19 Jul 2015 19:26:51
Also. PDC didn't bring quality in to replace what players left. Di-fanti brought another load of rubbish to replace the rubbish.

That's my point. Players we sign have to improve on what we have. How many out there will sign for us!

And 12 leaving and using all young to replace is not feasible . I do however advocate Watmore and a couple others being brought into the first team setup!

We are tied by the dross that's still on wage bill!. surely it would be cheaper to pay some of them off??

We create our own problems. Kaboul could work out to be a good signing, hopefully. But why give a player who is coming up to 30 a 4 year contract. He will be on a high wage and has a poor history with injuries. Like so many before him that we can't get off our books because of the good contracts we hand out to average players. It seems like there is no long term plan. A quick fix then leave the mess for the next coach to deal with. On a brighter note, I am sure lens will be great.

it isn't mediocrity. Johnson is one of the best we have got. selling 12 and getting in 3-4? with an already thin squad to do that is suicide. And putting in youngsters who in all respect aren't proven at this level would also be a mistake. I agree with watmore and maybe honeyman and agnew but who else? shipping out the dead wood will take more than one summer.

3 seasons of relegation battles. Caused by a total lack of quality. Haway FTM. let's be honest here. We are over loaded with dead wood the squad is too big anyway. If we keep this lot then relegation battle looms. Ok, when johno is on his game then yes he gives us something else. He just goes missing to often for me. The other 11 are surplus to safc needs. The 3 youngsters you mentioned 3-4 new signings and 2 domestic loans. Then me and you marra will be looking with pride at our club in the top 10!!!

don't get me wrong bobby k, I don't really like players such as brown oshea and whickham (the rest can go) but brown and whickham have new contracts so unfortunately won't and oshea can still do a decent job although I would start coates and kaboul if he stays fit. whickham could come good.I think. I agree the majority should go but it will take time purely because people do not want them so unless release them and pay them off then they will stay. we still need a striker!!

FTM,I am not trying to nit-pick but just when do you think Wickham will come good.We signed him in 2011 for 8M and we are still waiting for any sign of life.As for Johnson we all know he has ability but he is lazy and won't put any effort in,we have too many players who are just going through the motions and getting managers the sack.I am sure you know who they are,and they need to go,we may not be as lucky avoiding relegation again ths season.

FTM I have to agree with chris-s about wickham. He shows the odd flash of potential but when are we gona see it week in week out. Your right FTM about off loading the rest. Only championship teams would want them but their wages are the obsticle. I think we will just have to take a big loss on the majority just to get them off the books. Brian clough won 2 european cups with a team of players some of whom were deemed finished by their previous clubs. But they worked their socks off. Some of our players shouldn't even look in a mirror when it comes to work rate.

Agree FTM dunno why people are slagging off Johnson as on his day he's a match winner and like all gifted wingers they are not in the game for 90 mins!

The problem for me is that the deadwood is draining the finiances and perhaps its better to pay some of them off? one thing I like about Kaboul is that he's a motivator like Catts and we need that sort of player when the game isn't going our way!

I would give whickham playing time this season and see how he turns out. I don't no why but I just want him to come good so much. Young, English player who has talent just needs to pull his finger out.

as long as Dick plays him up front instead of the wing?. still don't like the 4-3-3 system for me it should always be 4-4-2 more positive!

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jul 2015 17:05:30
dick is keen on a 4-3-3 which is worrying to me is defoe is the main striker because he hasn't got the presence to be a lone striker. I quiet like a 4-1-3-2 with Larsson lens and giach maybe behind defoe and another striker or lens with defoe and giach Larsson and that creative midfielder with cats infront of defence? atleast defoe would have a partner? thoughts!?

Here's my thoughts. When Advocaat came back we heard 40-50 mil in the budget. Let's call it 45 mil. We've spent 15, so that leaves about 30 mil for these last 2 players. That's not counting what we could get for Graham and/or Fletcher, which I'm sure Short would give some of back to Congerton. That said, I see NO reason why we can't attract some quality players. Yes wages could be an issue for some of the big players, but surely we can find 2 quality players with that amount of money.

Thoughts?

is that 30 left after the 2 for vergini & the 7.5 we have to keep for alverez? Also remember sign on fees & agent fees come out of it too, doesn't go as far as it should these days. I hope we get a good creative midfielder, after that maybe our forwards will work better, it'd be nice to get another striker(maybe on loan?).

Left wanting

Watched the game today - it was a nightmare - but understand we are not near match fit yet ( though it seams other premiership teams are closer than us ) - that aside we still appear to be struggling big style down the left though our additional players (VanArnholt and Lens) will make a massive difference - I only wonder if we need more strength in depth down the left as heaven forbid if one of those two are injured I think we will be in big trouble - more so than in any other area of field - I also think If we are strong down the left it will help us get the best from our other players on the pitch - so for me additional strength down the left is just as important as another central midfield attacker where we could play a number of our squad with far more success than when we stick them out on the flanks.

It was disappointing. But I think Pantilimon would have stopped all 3 goals.

It's a Friday night and I'm skint and home alone so I have been reading a load of rumours and posts regarding SAFC. I am quite positive that next season will be a lot better than the previous few and I feel that we have a lot more goals in us than last seasons squad.

For example, I feel we should expect roughly the following:

Defenders: Of course they aren't there to score but if between the seven first team defenders currently on our books then surely between 1-5 is a reasonable aim?

Central Midfielders: You would like to think that between Rodwell, Gomez, Cattermole, Larrson and Bridcutt there would be at least 10 goals scored (13 last season).

Attacking Midfielders: At least 15 between Johnson, Lens, Buckley and Watmore baring in mind AJ has got 5-10 last two season and Lens reckons he can get 15.

Strikers: Defoe should get 10 goals. If Wickham and Fletcher get 5 a piece then there is 20. Graham - anything is a bonus.

That makes a total of about a minimum of 45 goals? Is that wishful thinking? A lot better total than last season.

Of course I would expect us to sign an attacking midfielder and another striker before the close of the window so all in all I think we can have a half decent season. A trophy to see our Dick off? We can dream.

Be good to hear your thoughts.

You must of had a drink on this Friday night, unless we get a creative midfielder and a proven goal scorer we will struggle again.
