It still worries me that we haven't got an out and out goal scorer. I can't see Wickham, Fletcher or Altidore getting 15 goals between them. I hope one of the ' surprises ' is a top class striker.

Agree with that comment 100% Borinifan . we need strikers and several have slipped through the transfer net and gone to other clubs .and at the end of the day its goals that win matches and get us points that will keep us out of relegation trouble!

2.) 28 Aug 2014 17:56:18
Insigne spotted a Seaham Hall

{Ed024's Note - Was he with Borini ?}

3.) 28 Aug 2014 19:54:12
Can’t wait for this surprise – wonder who it is? think it could be Cilla Black who announces it? the biggest surprise will be if we sign anybody. We need at least 6 as if we have any injuries we are f**ked.

4.) Oh Insigne…
I remember that last year, it's a shame really, we could have got him, he wasn't having game time, he stayed at Napoli and has become one of the best wingers in the world

My sauce told me Coates was in talks earlier in the month. See my post 5/8/14. He has been a target all along.

Borini will be an excellent acquisition. His work rate was excellent last season and if we can provide better service he will get plenty of goals. Fans should get behind the player and at least make him feel he is wanted. I for one can't wait for him to sign and am looking forward to an exciting campaign. I'm sure he'll sign soon.

I think Borini would be welcomed here its just the size of the fee that's the problem for most Sunderland fans and whether he wants to come here!

{Ed024's Note - Fee doesn't bother me so much, just not convinced he wants to be here.}

2.) He has never said he doesn't want to come here. Liverpool knew they were selling Suarez and even though they accepted our offer, it was always on the understanding that they bought a replacement. If they don't sign "lets say eto" then Borini will not be released. He had to go to USA as Liverpool wanted him to be part of THEIR pre season in case they could not get another forward in. That's my take on it anyway.

3.) Well put JC

4.) Spot on again JCFULLWELL!

Info from sauce. Sebastien Coates ( Liverpool ) and Uruguay in talks.

Borinifan

1.) I'd been wondering if we might have a little dabble after him. Uruguayan as you say and opening stating he might have to leave Liverpool for game time.

Could fit the bill of a guy who can play across the back. Not sure he's got the attacking FB element to his game though that Gus is after.

2.) 05 Aug 2014 22:30:18
uraguian slash Scottish

3.) 06 Aug 2014 06:49:52
Would be a good signing. We are now moving on from our bargain buys at Sainsburys and Tesco and moving up to M&S level. I do hope we also sign Rodriguez of Athletico as there has been nothing in the press suggesting he is in talks with anyone else.

4.) M and s are discounting on their clothing range at the moment. A buy 2 get one free from Tesco would be preferable.

5.) 06 Aug 2014 14:53:50
Think the Vergini deal is a loan due to a dispute over the transfer fee between 2 clubs who own him jointly . .pity i'd have him permanmently!.think the fee would be around £2million . bargain!

Get real people. Whickham should be sold in January. He is a championship player and if you were at the game today you would have seen why. We are woefully weak up front and all our league goals have come from midfield. It is going to be a long trek to January and if anyone thinks not you don't know much about football!!!!!!

Borinifan

1.) Well I was at the game and I disagree

It's hard for a striker when the opposition is basically camped around our box for literally the whole game and you're stood up there on your own with absolutely no support, basically the defence smashed the ball 50 yards up the pitch, you can't exactly expect him to bully/beat 4 defenders, but when he did get the ball he was basically on the half way line on his own, he could either turn and run at them which isn't his style or hold up the ball for like 10 seconds and lay it off, in his defence he did this relatively well but you don't really notice this because once he layed it off our Midfeild would always give up possession or get no where up the pitch, he was that starved of support he often found himself left in a wide position trying to create something and he did ok there as well winning a corner or 2. And that chance at the end that fell to Buckley who got there just before Wickham, if Wickham got his foot on that and buried it everyone would applaud because that basically would've been his only chance in front of goal

So yes, he wasn't too good but it's quite hard to blame him, fletcher wouldn't have put half the shift he put in. It showed that we needed a striker that could run in behind though today the amount of long balls or clearances that went behind the defence and couldn't created something from it

2.) Well your name tells me you don't know much about football either. The fact you throw yourself at the feet of a player whose overall Premiership scoring record is one goal in six and has only scored four goals from open play in this league tells me you are a bit off the pace knowledge wise as well. Wickham has had better games that is for sure but never hid and worked hard all afternoon.

3.) It's not Wickham's work ethic I'm talking about. No doubt about it, he works harder than Fletcher ever thought about on the pitch. It's his lack of creativity, his lack of runs, poor passes. He did great at the end of last term; full credit. Also in preseason; full credit. It wasn't his fault he had to play on the left for the first three matches, either. But yesterday, he was flat. I'm not saying sell him, or get rid of him, I'm just saying he should have been subbed out.
I honestly think they want him to sign a new contract so bad that they will continue to play him regardless of how he's performing. If they don't, they risk driving his market value down. The only way to get him to sign or raise his value is to keep playing him and hope he scores. At this point, not playing him only hurts the club.

As I said many weeks ago Coates will be here soon to bolster the defence. Vergini looked comfortable yesterday. It's obvious we lack goal scoring ability up front. Personally if we can get people in I would get rid of Wickham and Fletcher. Championship players on Premiership wages. It never fails to amaze me when people sing their praises. Open your eyes for gods sake!!!!

Personally if we can get anywhere near the 8 million we should take it for Whickham. We won't get that of course as he only has a year left on his contract. Neither he or Altidore are going to get us anything like the number of goals we need. Whickham gets knocked off the ball too easily and Altidore, although stronger, couldn't hit a barn door fron five yards. Having said all that we are in desperate need of a proven goal scorer or we are going to struggle to get enough goals. I trust in Poyet to get the people he needs by the end of the week. I HOPE!!!!!

We are in desperate need of a proven goal scorer. Pre season has proved this.

If everyone is honest Whickham isn't up to the job and anyone who has watched him over a period of time would know that. Vergini was outstanding at right back towards the end of the season. We need people at the club who are young and hungry to succeed not just here for the money hence Rodwell and the Chelsea boy are great signings. If Whickham doesn't want to stay then it's because he doesn't believe he is up to the job. Borini will come if he has any ambition to play regular football and my info is that he will by end of week.

Borinifan

1.) Remember how old Wickham is; he's still learning his trade and he's still coming to terms with the demands of the Premiership.

While I think he's unlikely to get the game time he craves here this season, meaning I think he will not sign and so be sold, I do think we should ensure we have some kind of sell-on clause in there as I've a horrible feeling he could be a £20m+ player in a couple of seasons.
