I see them up the road are now favourites for Alderweireld. Where did that come from? Are we just their smokescreen?

barls

1.) It's just one site, we were favourites yesterday, arsenal the day before, nobody the day before that
It's just a merry-go round

What basically was said about Newcastle, has been said about everyone else
Were 2/1 to get Richards now, jumping ahead of Newcastle etc, but is he the type of defender Gus wants?

2.) 31 Aug 2014 11:28:22
I thought the idea was that Congerton was establishing a professional player acquisition strategy that would mean potential recruits were secure in the knowledge that they were joining a well run club with a clear strategy for developing the team. He has not been very successful, as we still seem to be a destination of last resort for quality players, while the likes of Southampton, Hull, Palace, and even debt-ridden minnows QPR recruit with ease. Someone needs to take a hard look at the way the club has managed its affairs this summer, because the ground and the supporters are still the only assets we have that are indisputably Premier League quality.

I see we're rumoured to be favourites again for Micah Richards (loan for a season with a £4m option to buy).

Good player but prefer him at RB than CB in which case is he right for us and why did we get Jones and Vergini in?

if the rumours about alvarez and alderweireld are correct, they would represent two good captures, albeit loans. if both are committed to the move, then they could prove great additions.

barls

1.) The Alvarez deal is loan for €1mil with view to buy for €8.5mil IF safc stay up

2.) Of course SAFC will stay up. Just sign it now and get it out of the way. :)

Abel Hernandez turned down a move to Benfica today apparently stating he wants a move to a different move. Is he still a possibility?

barls

1.) Meant to say "move to a different league".

2.) He wants Newcastle

3.) One Italian website claiming he's off to Hull! Same website says Athletico Madrid now joining Milan in the chase for Borini.

4.) 27 Aug 2014 13:43:27
So Sad that Hull can attract a player like Hernandez and we aren't in for him?

{Ed024's Note - Hernandez spent season last season in Serie B, Hull prioritised Rhodes above him. So, although a promising talent, not one to lose sleep over. At £10M I'd put that deal in the panic buy category. We do need a forward but not Abel Hernandez.}

5.) The club put all their eggs in one basket with Borini. If we don't get him then anyone who comes in between now and Monday will be a panic buy.

{Ed024's Note - I think we need to forget about Borini....if he was coming, he'd be here.}

6.) 27 Aug 2014 15:51:05
If Borini does come here either permanently or on loan it will be interesting the fans reaction to him after all the hassle!

7.) When Borini arrived last season it was on the premise that a successful season with Sunderland would undoubtedly lead him back into the Liverpool squad for the next season and no-one can deny he was successful at SAFC, HOWEVER Liverpool have moved on and he is as far away as ever from a regular first team place. With this in mind if he comes to Sunderland again will we see a moody so and so with a face like a smacked backside skulking around the Academy and Stadium and more importantly not putting the same amount of effort. Think of it another way. . . Chelsea, Roma, Swansea and Liverpool cannot all be wrong. I don't want the club to be "sloppy seconds" and we have seen enough players use us as a safe harbour without putting the effort in to last us all a lifetime.

So we've missed out on Kalou, Borini now likely to be heading abroad, Richards it seems is the same. van Dijk has been told he is staying at Celtic and Newcastle now favourites for Alderweireld. Who does that leave us with for tomorrow?

What is happening with Sinclair and Richards? The odds haven't moved for days but not hearing anything that suggests either move is imminent.

Is there no chance we could get Nastasic from City? Big, strong, mobile, young and PL experience. He fits the bill.

Why is it we end up having a fire sale most windows. We're again trying to give away our players. Scocco lost us over £1m, N'Diaye nearly £2m, Graham we ended up paying his wages last season and looks like we can't shift him again this window, so a £4m+ hit there. Then there's Diakite and Cabral who there appears to be no takers for and so it goes on. When other clubs have players that fail they somehow seem to manage to get decent money for them. Take Ben Arfa, I know he's not gone yet but Newcastle are looking at £8-10m for a player they've given up on!

Even Wickham we've got to a place where a club will take him off us for next to nothing!

I think the last player we managed to get anywhere near what we wanted for them was Migs!

barls

1.) Because our past 4 managers (Poyet included) has brought in some sh*t players.

2.) Didn't we get more back for bent? Henderson went for big money. Gyan we broke even. I agree we do let players go on the cheap sometimes but it's not all droom and gloom. We need have faith in the club they pulled off the rodwell deal didn't they? At least were not signing more like diakite and roberge. Gutted we didn't end up with clayton. Good young player

So if the Echo's comments are correct about our transfer budget having being used and that we're now looking at loans, that effectively rules out the likes of Richards, van Dijk, Welbeck and so on; those players are only likely to leave their current clubs on permanent deals.

barls

1.) Let's hope the Echo have got this wrong like everything else they report on our club

{Ed024's Note - How can we have no cash available if the Borini deal is still on the table ?}

2.) Eds right. That would mean we gave up on Borini when we got Rodwell. I saw that article. I don't see how those numbers could be right.

Just signed a two-year deal with Benfica.

Possibly but some clubs also know you're desperate and will try and exploit that. Like Liverpool wanting a large loan fee for Borini because they know we're desperate?

Yes, I'm guessing this means Borini isn't coming. He's been quoted as saying he would only consider a loan and I don't see Coates being bought with the risks over his knee so it's one or the other.

If Borini isn't coming I would like to see Welbeck but I can't see that happening, especially when he's said one of the reasons he's leaving MU is because he wants to play as an out and out striker and we can't offer that.

So who else? Kalou, I'm not convinced about him; I always thought he was an average player made to look good by those around him. Salah, maybe on loan? Sinclair, seems to have gone cold now. Not sure who else.

A £2m bid for Ben Arfa?

Really disappointed about the Fer news; I'd been hoping we'd have a dart after him all summer and it seemed to be all falling into place nicely . I was thinking 4-2-3-1 with Cattermole and M'Vila holding, Johnson right, Lens left with one of Rodwell, Fer or Giaccerini in the middle then one of Defoe, Fletcher or Januzaj up top . seen worse sides in the Premiership?

I'm not sitting comfortably .

I do think we'll lose both of our remaining games meaning we'll be dependent on what Hull and Newcastle do, or should I say what Manchester United and West Ham do.

If Arsenal beat us, they are third so Manchester United have nothing to play for and may experiment with a few kids. Also, I'm still not sure we've been forgiven for the laughing in the stands after Man C pipped them for the title on the last day of the season.

I also think our goal difference won't be better than Newcastle's come the last knockings of the season so I really do think it could be us that goes.

I hope I'm wrong!

Fair shout. even if we want to get shot of him, he's got to have a chance to attract some suitors. who knows what went on there?

I don't understand all of the vitriol towards Borini or Liverpool for that matter. The guy wants to stay and fight for his place in a side challenging for the title and in the Champions League. Is it so wrong to do that than to go to a side that will be in another relegation dogfight?

As time ticks on and Liverpool continue to spend, the club has to offload its deadwood. We have withdrawn our offer so Liverpool are now not in a great bargaining position; they need him out the door. Borini now realises he's not going to be able to stay so he needs to take whatever is available. I suspect if we went back in wih a bid he would prefer us over QPR but that ship has sailed.

No lack of respect, no exploiting us, no taking the p**s, it's just business.

I will be massively ashamed if he gets booed at the SoL later this season if he does end up with QPR. Just remember what he did for us last season and be grateful!
