Anyone have any idea how far away Fletcher is from a return. It worrys me when a player misses pre-season, they always seem to endure a difficult season which is a shame because I think a fully fit Fletcher up top with Altidore will cause problems and of course score goals.
I'm still a little worried we won't score enough. any thoughts or info?

Marco75

{Ed024's Note - His aim was to be ready for start of season but that looks unlikely now as he will not have played in any pre-season games. Sessignon/Giaccherini playing in behind Altidore might be the tactic in the early games - I was expecting to be hearing more about Sess going by now - not sure if PDC can fit Sess and Giaccherini into a team that has Altidore and Fletcher in it. What does everyone think ? I would love Sess to stay but is a 442 with Sess and Giaccherini too adventurous ??}

1.) Could it be possible to play sess and johnno on the flanks giacherini sorry for spelling in centre mid and have one holding midfielder which would leave room for two up top. just a thought

2.) I think PDC has to push the boundaries a bit. If Fletch isn't fit and Sess is still a Sunderland player then I think playing him and Giacherrini behind is a very good tactic. Unless he decides to play Sess down the middle and then Gia and Johnson on the wings. Either way a strong attacking line up.

3.) Goacherrini sess johnson and two strikers is far too much for one team, we would be too exposed off the ball. However, I would be delighted to have all of them in the squad. A big problem last year was a lack of depth in the squad and very rarely had decent options on the bench. Some strong competition for places can do wonders for the team and I think Di Canio will rotate the team depending on the opposition. Counting down the days til wednesday to watch some new boys in action. ha'way the lads. JohnSafc

4.) I can't see why we can't have sess & Giacherini in the squad, although I'm not so sure where Sess would fit into a 442. I guess if Fletcher is out he'll probably start up top alongside Altidore. It's always been something of an issue with Sess, he's a great player ( when it suites him ) but he doesn't seem to have a most effective position. I can see a lot of responsibility lying on Cabral's shoulders as the holding midfielder this season. Which leads me to another point. If he's happy to be part of a squad and not a shoe in every week like under previous managers, I would keep hold of Cattermole.

Derby line up should be as follows ;

Westwood
Celuska
Roberge
Brown
Colback
Cattermole (C)
Cabral
Ki
Gardner
Altidore
Fletcher

4-1-3-2

Marco75

1.) And drop giacherini?. would play that but put giacherini in instead of cabral and dossena in for colback, cobacks weak there we get too exposed

2.) Westwood
Celustka, O'Shea, Diakite, Colback
Ki, Catts,
Larsson, Giaccherini, Johnson
Fletcher

•The defence must leave no gaps at all, they have 3 quick players up front who can punish
•Catts needs to stay on the field
•Wingers must track back
•Don't let Giaccherini get out numbered
•Larsson (RM), Johnson (LM) put balls in the box for fletcher and Giaccherini
•Don't be lazy on the ball, make space for each other and make sure the pass is good
•DON'T CONCEDE FROM SET PIECES

3.) I think were so all over the place it's not worth worrying or thinking about which players go out there sunday. Whoever they are have to show guts and desire and our job is to create an amazing atmosphere and just see where it gets us. Certainly don't want to go to a derby game feeling anything other than pumped up and passionate.

4.) O'Shea? Seriously?

You must be the only SAFC fan that would have him anywhere near the squad let alone the starting line up!

5.) Okay I'm sorry, I completely forgot about Brown

But if he does play, it would not be the end of the world Baring in mind…
•No one wanted him in the team last time yet he was absolutely phenomenal
•He is used to the big game occasions
•If you want to replace him with Roberge or Diakite who have just been as bad as him and with no experience in this sort of game is a huge gamble

But either way, I still think we'll get thumped
We have good players, but a bad team

6.) We need to play 2 wingers who will drop back to support our defenders this will counter act Newcastle wide men and also I think debuchy and santon along with lads in the middle of their defence are vulnerable against anyone with pace coming from midfield so I would play a 4 5 1 system

So Kevin Ball shows his hand by bringing back Cuellar, Larrson & Gardner. backward step Kevin and one which will see you fail. Our last three managers proved that theory.
We are at a cross roads and for me a strong minded coach is required. One who is capable of man management. He needs to bring with him a reputation that will put players in there place before a ball has been kicked, letting them know that he is king. Only problem is I don't think this guy exists in the circles our football club lives in.

Our new gaffer is going to have to find a way of rooting out the lame attitudes / performances from a group of players who rule the roost of our club.
PDC seen the problem but went about remedying it the wrong way.

The players brought in by the club this summer are the immediate future of our club, like that fact or not. Those players where the clubs summer strategy and need to played.
Ellis Short and his new hierarchy sanctioned the signing of these players. He sanctioned the number of signings we made because previously we where simply not good enough. Ellis now needs to stand up and be counted and bring in the right man with the remit of gelling these players into a football team.

Yesterdays huff & puff performance by Ballys starting XI wasnt that of a football team. It was disjointed, shambolic defending providing a shoddy foundation for some very decent attacking play. No balance, just some very decent individual performances. Giacherini, Ki & Cattermole all looked like players we can build around. John O'Shea owed the club a massive performance after the WBA farce and what followed it. He was at best. shocking and has been all season so far.

I wish I could finish this article with the name a manager who could come in and perform this miracle but sadly I cant. And that is the most worrying part of where we find ourselves!

Marco75

1.) And you lot all thought Ball was the man after beating a league 1 side.

3-1 is a respectable score line for you lot. It probably would have been much more if PDC's players were out there.

2.) we gave liverpool a game and should of got something out of it if it weren't for biased Webb screwing us again

I see we've reached that all to familiar stage already where the 'SACK HIM' V 'GIVE HIM TIME' argument has reared it's ugly head.
Personally I'm not sure what some fans expect from a football club that has been such perennial under achievers.
Lets look at the cold hard facts for a moment, apart from two purple patch seasons under Peter Reid we've been in decline for 60 years. Take a look at our final league positions since Reidy left and ask yourself again why no decent players want to come and play there football for SAFC. Our highest league position in 13 years has been a very fortunate 10th under a manager who wasnt given the lickings of a dog! Some fans not old enough may like to take up an invitation to see where our club was in the 80's.
Having a big shiny 49K capacity stadium and throwing millions and millions of pounds at hasbeens and flops doesn't give you the right to be a decent EPL side.
A team, a club has to be moulded and structured over time. Teams like Liverpool and Everton have struggled for a good few years now to regain former prowess but in doing so retain there beliefs of how the game should be played. A model followed by the likes of Swansea and Aston Villa.
We on the other hand throw all caution to the wind and with it millions of pounds to the latest fall guy we nail are colours to. Believing there style of play will bring a new dawn to a sadly down beat football club. Has this strategy bore us any fruit. No, none at all!

Marco75

1.) Lets get reid back then

2.) Yes a Club has to be moulded over time. Well, when are you lot going to give it time. Everyone wants instant success. This is a wholesale rebuild of the club, not just the team. It will take time. A lot longer than 5 or 10 games. The structure has been changed throughout. This was necessary when Di Canio took over because the Club was in a mess. He has had to clear out the considerable amount of utter dross that was swanning around taking mega wages and giving nothing in return. Players unfit and undisciplined, and useless hanger-on like Miliband bleeding the Club dry.
It has all had to be sorted out from top to bottom and the process is still ongoing and will be for some time.
We all must be patient and stop talking about sacking a manager after 5 games. This type of knee-jerk reaction is not the answer. Hopefully we will be OK but we have had no luck so far (Altidore's goal last week should have stood and Fletcher's injury this week is hard to swallow).
Maybe we should brace ourselves to go down and come back stronger after rebuilding, even if it is tough to take. Although I would prefer to stay up even if we are 4th bottom at the end of the season. Then we can push on next season but we need some stability now or we will definitely go down.

3.) Instant success!! how many years do you want us to wait.

4.) I don't think pdc will be given any more time as di matteo is the next manager so the Italion connection will still be there shame as I like pdc but results are what matter

5.) Marco. What are you actually saying should happen next. Given where we are now do we sack Paolo, do we give him more time or do we just wish different things had happened years ago? Personally I think the only thing to do at this point is stick to the plan.

Problem with Vaughan is, he has no physical presence in the middle of the park. He is all youve mentioned but in the cut & thrust of the EPL, you need to assert yourself or have the players around you to provide that presence. Players like Mata & Hazard have world class midfield players alongside them. We are already trying to accommodate Sessegnon into our starting 11 simply because he is one of the few match winners in our squad and has to play if we are to create goal scoring chances.

I'd have Westwood in ahead of Manone although I can see Paolo's signing getting the nod. Agree with the comment about that midfield being over-run. Surely after witnessing first hand how Huddlestone can run the show in the middle of the park we have to push a deal through for him?
I also think the lad Perruzi will arrive before 17/08. After impressing during the Asia trophy I'd be tying Colback down with a long term deal as our first choice left back. You can keep your fancily named foreigners, this kid is home grown, more than good enough and young enough to convert himself into a Sunderland stalwart for years to come.

Who's suggesting he did, that's just stupid! Point is who would play in that position against a free scoring Man City in the cup final? Colback, Larsson or Gardner. NO THANKS!

Marco75

{Ed024's Note - Colback possibly could, but more likely to be Cattermole}

Bridcutt is cup tied for the league cup final!

{Ed024's Note - Yup - but Poyet wasn't buying him to play in one game.}

No wonder our club reigns as perennial fodder in the EPL with comments from fans like, 'Ki is brilliant' and 'Borini is one of our most technically gifted players'.
They both belong to other clubs, clubs who didn't want them around becase they aren't good enough. So what happens, we get them. They form part of an inept squad of players who have taken '8 POINTS' this season and you come on here and defend them. If its third tier footall you crave like what we suffered in the 80's then you must be loving what your seeing out on the park because that's where we're heading. Players like Ki & Borini might show the odd neat touch, pass or finish but they haven't intergrated into a team. Football matches are won & lost as a team. Look at your Hull Citys and your Southampton's. Not a superstar in site but as a team there hard to beat. We on the other hand role over and die like the proverbial xmas puppy!

Finally Sundrland supporters talking sense. At worst between now and the January transfer window Cattermole & Cabral should start in central midfield. I for one would prefer this than all the flops where being linked with. Every article linking us with a potential signing starts with the words, Liverpool flop, Swansea flop.
For the last few seasons we seem to be carrying 3/4 players during games. Larrson, Vaughan, Gardner, Wickham and Ji all need to be moved on. they've all been given time to prove themselves but are totally out of there depth in the EPL.

You only get what you pay for do you. Hmmm!

Owen £16m- 71 App's in 4 years. Wages in excess of £100K per week. Left to join Man Utd for free.

Marceleno £5.8m- 20 App's in 4 years.

Stephane Guivarch £3.5m- voted worst striker ever to play in the EPL by the Daily Mail.

Andreas Anderson £3m- 1 season, 4 goals.

Albert Luque £11.5m
Jon Dahl Tomasson £2.5m
Jean-Alain Boumsong £8m

Shall I continue. Please stop coming on our site spouting pathetic nonsense. If its genuine football banter you want then please return but that childish drivel youve wrote is just ridiculous.
